Bara Brith + Chicken Sofrito

2009-02-22bread-5699
For the last year, I’ve been trying to fine tune my food photography skills. This — I’m sure — is from flipping through too many Food + Wine and Travel + Leisure magazines. Nonetheless, food photography ain’t easy. It’s more than just putting the camera on a narrow depth of field, pointing, and shooting. For one, some foods look just plain awful. I’m thinking of scrambled eggs and pretty much any of this crap. Secondly, food has to be shot fresh out-of-the-oven/off-the-skillet/out-of-the-pot/off-the-grill. After about four or five minutes it starts to lose its shape, its color gets dull, and all the nasty bits (i.e. grease) ooze out the bottom. You probably haven’t noticed this. I hadn’t. It took a pro to tell me what a pain food photography can be, and this hurry-up-and-shoot part is chief among them.

I won’t show the pork tenderloin experiment from Saturday night. Let’s just say we know how to follow a recipe and execute it, but plating it is another matter. Pig products should never look like a smiley face, and a sprig of rosemary shouldn’t look like a tuft of hair. It was bad.

But I was happy with Sunday’s experiments. Hailey (the resident baker) made Bara Brith, a delicious tea bread from Wales. I’m not sure of all that went into it, but it required soaking tea bags in water with brown sugar and a medley of dried fruit before folding that into the dough. It’s easily the best sweet breakfast bread she’s ever made.

The top photo was taken with the ring flash off camera (to the right) on a manual setting (1/125, f/20, 100 ISO). The bottom one, with available cloudy light pouring in the window. As much as I want the ring flash to make me a better food photographer, I like the natural light shot more.

For dinner, we made what has become a new favorite — chicken sofrito. It’s a Spanish chicken and rice dish in which you brown chicken thighs and legs, add zesty goods (onions, garlic, peppers, fennel seed, spices), a cup of rice, chicken broth and then you bake it for 25 minutes and finish it off with a quick broil to crisp the chicken. We got the recipe out of a recent Food + Wine Magazine and we’ve cooked it three times in four weeks. Needless to say, I think fennel seed should be a secret ingredient on the Iron Chef. I love that stuff.

Both of the above sofrito shots were taken with the ring flash off camera, and here it worked pretty well. The chicken is actually backlit on a wooden table in the top shot…that explains the yin-ying black and white effect on top and bottom.

We’ll be trying a few more experiments in the coming weeks. Its a good time of year to be dinking around with the flash. More to come soon.

Tomato Sacrifice

2009-02-15ringflash-5539
There’s not much to say about this one. A perfect pair of tomatoes in the fridge, three sharp knives and desire to experiment with light and shadow by triggering the ring flash remoting from across the room.

2009-02-15ringflash-5534
Oh yeah, and a glass of water. I figured this may have some sort of stock value some day…like the kind of thing used in an annual report…or maybe not. Yeah, its a bit esoteric.

2009-02-15ringflash-5541
I was just thrilled that the ABR800 was smart enough to sync and fire with my external flash without any complicated formula or another accessory. Pretty simple really.

2009-02-15ringflash-55451And for the record, this tomato was used in a salad later in the night.

New Light, New Era

2009-02-15ringflash-5577
It’s amazing how one piece of gear can reacquaint you with your creativity.

For about three months now, I’ve been comparison shopping for another light source. My system is great, and its well on its way, but I felt like I was coming up short with my indoor work. I shoot with a Canon 40D (which has a built-in flash I never use, for good reason), I have two prime lenses (a 50mm and 24mm, great for available light, but they have their limits) and a Speedlight 580EXII. This last one is an external flash, and its good, but somewhat limiting. Flashes from the top of a camera cast light from an angle that often looks flat. So while under the influence of the Strobist blog, I decided to get a flash off my camera and start playing with light.

2009-02-14ringflash-5467
So why did I end up buying this beast: the ABR800? A ring flash that mounts around the lens of the camera? Well, needless to say, I got sidetracked. And needless to say, this thing is killer cool.

2009-02-14ringflash-5375b
For one, ring flashes are often used for fashion photography because they cast light from the same angle as the lens, meaning minimal shadows, and skin tones that look great. Plus, it creates a circular catch light in the model’s eyes (click the image above and you can see the ring flash reflected in Hailey’s eyes).

2009-02-14ringflash-55001
Enough technical stuff. The package arrived Thursday and it took me three hours over the course of two nights to get the light, the light stand, the mount and the “moon unit” (a 30-inch diffuser) set up.

2009-02-14ringflash-54372
But by Saturday, I was getting the hang of it, and in early evening before we started cooking some din-din, Hailey and I experimented in the living room for an hour or two.

2009-02-14ringflash-5389

The first few set-ups have a bit of a hard edge to them. Bright highlights, rich colors…much of that has to do with our living room, which is painted bright red.

2009-02-14ringflash-5396
But it can also be toned down to cast a softer light (which will be great for kid portraits and weddings) and it can be triggered remotely by my Speedlight flash. In this shot below, we had the ring flash on a tripod to my right and the Speedlight angled up and behind me. This alone makes the ring flash pretty darn versatile for studio and portable studio work.

2009-02-15ringflash-5512
Could this be the equivalent of the boot shot for the ring flash?

2009-02-15ringflash-5515
I also gave backlighting a try, but this will need more practice. Below is Hailey in front of the ring flash as its triggered. She moves in mysterious ways…

2009-02-15ringflash-55191

With the camera mounted back through the ring flash, we decided to pretend we’re cool with our cheap sunglasses and ooo and ahh the catch light in our lenses. Take 1:

Take 2: check out that big ol’ moon unit in our lenses.

2009-02-15ringflash-5641
Next up….results of the food photography experiment with the ring flash mounted off camera. Knives and a juicy tomato…will post it later this week.

Turning Three Years Old

2009-02-08bajia-5339
Jeremiah and Isaiahmy lovable little twin nephews — are back on the blog, and this time they are turning three years old. With age comes added wisdom, like saying “thank you” as a good will gesture, or like understanding the value of sharing (they’re getting there, they’re getting there). Helping them get a grasp of the fun little world they live in is older brother Andrew, who continues to amaze everyone with his vocabulary, his creative and perfectly symmetrical engineering of Lego Empires, and his deductive reasoning. Andrew has always been wicked smart, but after a year in Montesorri School, Andrew is super wicked smart.

2009-02-08bajia-5320
Here’s Isaiah, negotiating a counter-proposal on a house in Briargate (Ben’s hands were covered in cake icing and he was in no position to handle the phone). In reality, it was my mom, calling before leaving the house for the party to wish the boys a happy birthday. Isaiah was great on the phone, right up until the point when he lost interest, set the phone down and walked away while Mom kept talking to him.

2009-02-08bajia-5331
By the way, Ben was baking a birthday cake. Two birthday cakes. The recipe? “Death by Chocolate.” Jeremiah’s got a few more years before he can grow a goatee like Daddy, but he’s well on his way here.

2009-02-08bajia-5349
Isaiah and Jeremiah’s third birthday party had a definite theme going: Cars, the film by Pixar. Nothing makes the boys happier than Lightning McQueen, especially Isaiah. “Ka-chow!”

2009-02-08bajia-5364
“Death by Chocolate” is finally unveiled at the birthday party.

2009-02-08bajia-5342
Happy birthday guys.

Cora Rhiannon Lamberton – Feb. 10, 2009

2009-02-11lamberton-5305
On Tuesday, our good friends Tim and Elexis welcomed their first-born daughter to the world — Cora Rhiannon Lamberton. Wednesday night we drove down to Sky Ridge Medical Center with our friend Jenny to meet her. As with most newborns, she mainly sleeps, cries, passes gas, squirms a bit and studies things intently with her eyes, but already you can tell she’s a sweet little girl. I mean just look at her:

2009-02-11lamberton-5296
Both Tim and Lexi seemed remarkably relaxed and laid-back for first-time parents. That’s Tim (above) wrapping her up in her blanket. If his residential law gig doesn’t pan out someday, he could always work at Chipotle. Nice wrap, man.

2009-02-11lamberton-5283
While we were there, Tim’s brother and sister-in-law — Rory and Natalie — stopped by. Below is Rory holding Cora for the first time, and Jenny watching her sleep.

2009-02-11lamberton-5280
Tim recently started his own family blog, which will document Cora as she grows up. For this circle of friends — which consists of four couples: Hailey and me, Tim and Elexis, Matt and Jenny, and Stu and Shannon — this was the first baby.

2009-02-11lamberton-5285
I love this one (below). It’s always fascinating to watch a newborn figure things out with their eyes. Here, she’s studying Hailey (with a little suspicion, no less).

2009-02-11lamberton-5276
The funny thing about me holding Cora is that she’s so small, the enormity of my head really comes through, don’tcha think?

2009-02-11lamberton-5275
Tim, Lexi and Cora checked out of the hospital midday Thursday, after checking in midday Monday. It was a long delivery, but they’re home and happy (in fact, Tim just called asking for a quick tutorial in WordPress).

2009-02-11lamberton-5292
Mama Lex and Papa Tito. Congrats guys.

2009-02-11lamberton-5316

The blog has been pretty static, but I’m going to be ramping up with a lot more imagery in the coming days and weeks. We just purchased an AlienBees ABR800 Ring Flash. Why? Hopefully the bad ass images it takes will explain why. Plus, birthday images (Jer and Isaiah turned 3 on Sunday) and hopefully an announcement of 2009′s big trip. We’re hopefully booking plane tickets this weekend. Stay tuned.
